theHunter: Primal Game Guide

Here’s a intro game guide for theHunter: Primal.

Remember, this game is still under development so I’ll change this guide as the game gets updated.

Intro

theHunter: Primal Map

theHunter: Primal Map

You take the mission to recolonize Primal Eden, a primitive world inhabited by dinosaurs. For this, you will have to hunt and survive on the planet.

The controls are straightforward: move with the W, S, A, D keys (forward, back, left and right) and look, aim and shoot with the mouse. You interact (pick rocks and open cases) with the E key, F to throw the rocks and I to access the inventory. Each slot of the inventory has its own key (1 to 5). You also can sprint while pressing the C key and go crouch and prone with the Ctrl key (SHIFT to get up again).
You can toggle auto-run pressing the Q key and free-look mode with the X key.

The game has two playing modes, single player and multiplayer. Both require internet and steam connection.
In single player, or more accurate – private game session, you face the world by yourself. As for multiplayer, you can play with other players, in cooperative mode or against each others (PVP) – and the world.
In the game the time is 12 x faster, so one day cycle is about 2 hours of real time.

You start the game with nothing more than some clothes, a bow, pack of arrows and the SettlerMate. When continuing a game, you will start with your previous items. When you die, you start a new game.

theHunter: Primal - T-Rex Track

T-Rex Track

The SettlerMate is a GPS / tracking device that you can use to see yourself on the map and get info about the animals tracks. For more information you can check out the ingame Survival Handbook.

The player has 2 stats: health (green bar) and stamina (blue bar).
Every time you take damage, your health decreases and when depleted you die. You can regain health by using health packs (canisters) or by eating mushrooms and dino eggs.
Stamina will give you the ability to sprint (run faster) and while sprinting it will decrease. You will regain stamina when walking (running normally) – slower – or when stopped – faster.

Area

theHunter: Primal - Poisonous Plant

Poisonous Plant

The game area is a island, and it’s pretty big (“24 km2 / 9.3 mi2“). You will find several kinds of terrain, from rocky terrain (watch out to not fall from cliffs and die) to swamps and primitive forests. Not only you have to watch out for the dangerous animals, but you also have to be careful with the poisonous plants that can give you damage or even kill.

theHunter: Primal - Tree trunk shelter

Tree trunk shelter

At the forests you can find places to hide, like the tall bushes/plants and in the tree trunks, or prepare ambushes. But don’t be too confident, the animals can even get you here if you aren’t careful enough!

In the rocky terrains, like the mountains and volcano, and also along the shore, you can find rocks that you can collect and use later on to distract animals that are tracking you down. You should also be very careful around the cliffs, if you fall you can loose health and even die (or drown, if you fall into deep waters).

theHunter: Primal - Mushrooms

Mushrooms

A bit all over the map, you also find mushrooms that you can eat. Some will give you health (yellow) while others (red) will test your lucky – they can hurt you or give you health.

Throughout the island, there are old camp sites where you can get more and better gear in order to help you survive and give you shelter.

Animals

In game there are currently 3 species of dinosaurs: Utahraptor, Triceratops and T-Rex. The raptors and T-Rex, being carnivorous, are the dangerous ones while the Triceratops, herbivorous, not so much. Each specie has its own male and female variant and also have color variations: green, red and black. They also produce a set of different tracks that you can ID using the SettlerMate and also lay eggs that you can eat to regain health.
Whenever you eat an egg, you will be more easily spotted by that dinosaur specie for 1 minute.

As scoring goes, the black variation seems to be the top one. In general (not a rule), the order will be green, red and black – lowest score to highest. Another important factor of the trophy score is the trophy integrity – TI. When shooting at the animal, you should always place your shoots correctly, aim for the vitals, and never unload all your ammo on them – use only the necessary ammo. Otherwise you will ruin the trophy and even a #1 black dino will end up with a standard low score.

The Utahraptor tend to be in packs, generally of 3 to 5, but there may be occasions where you can find 10+ together. The Triceratops may sometimes travel along with 2 or 3 mates, and the T-Rex is a solo hunter. But I had occasions where I have encountered up to 3 T-Rex in the same location.

One recommendation I made is to know the animals. Before going into “hunter mode”, explore the areas and do a little scouting on the animals. They have sounds and movements (animations) that you can understand and predict their next action.

A easy way to check the animal color variation is by looking the animal eyes (color).
Besides the shown tracks, all animals also produce a sound track that can be picked up and ID by the SettlerMate. For more information you can check out the ingame Survival Handbook.

Equipment

theHunter: Primal - Gear Case

Gear Case

All over the island, randomly placed or at the old camp sites, you will find cases that contain equipment. This includes weapons, ammo and even camo clothes.

The cases come in 3 sizes, and the bigger the case, the more and better gear it will have, in general.

In the SettlerMate (display) these cases appear as black cubes and when you start, or continue, a game these cases will be re spawned with new content.

The bow is your starting weapon, it’s the most silent weapon but the less powerful.

.44 Disciplinary Handgun

Handgun Scope

The handgun is compact and mobile, and with its scope is a great backup to have (when nothing better is available).

Red Eye Shotgun Sight

Red Eye Shotgun Sight

The shotgun is a great all around weapon, it can be used to hunt every specie (at close range). As for the ammo, there seems to be no great difference between them (power and damage wise), so use them at will. But buckshot seem to work better (I guess due the pellets dispersion).

.308 Marksman Rifle

.308 Marksman Rifle

.308 Ammo

.308 Ammo

Marksman Scope

Marksman Scope

The .308 has greater precision and takes more ammo (also reloads faster), which sometimes is useful but for stopping power go for the .700. The scope is really handy for getting a better view of the terrain and animals, but not so much for close and fast shooting.

.700 Double Rifle

.700 Double Rifle

.700 Ammo

.700 Ammo

The .700, the most powerful weapon of the game. It feels like you’re going on a safari!

Generally, I carry both rifles. The .308 for initial precision shots or finishing shots, when animal is about 15% health or bellow, over distance. More commonly, I tend to use the .700.
Also remember to always place your shoots correctly and the more powerful the weapon is, the more noise will make, thus attracting unwanted attention.

The camouflage rating indicates how effective the items are for camouflage. The higher the rating, the better they camouflage and prevent animals from spotting you.
Also remember that when you eat an egg, your camouflage will decrease for that specific specie during 1 minute.

Hunting Tips

  •  As I said before, scout the animals and learn about them. They have specific behavior/animations that you can use for you advantage.
  • Don’t be sprinting all the time. While sprinting, the animals will spot you easier.
  • Always be prepared and pack yourself. Some times it may requires extra ammo to take down big animals or you also might be in a situation where its just too many of them.
  • When farming loot, make sure you remove all the gear from the cases so it respawns. Even if you don’t need it, just get it and then you can drop it on the floor. Or you can simply camp near a old camp site and enter and exit the game until you have all that you need (but it’s more fun to just go around the camps).
  • Practice your aiming/shooting.
  • If you encounter an animal, unless you want to hunt it, avoid him. It’s better to use stealth than to engage an animal you don’t really want. There might be other animals on the vicinity that will be drawn to you or in the other case, that will flee away.
  • The closer, the better! Even the .700 can only does some scratches at far distances. But also keep your distance, specially if you’re trying to shoot down a T-Rex and he stomps against you. Know your distance, but all weapons are way better at short distance.
  • Always place your shoots correctly. Aim for the vitals (heart/lungs) and don’t shoot at random. You will be wasting ammo and ruining the trophy integrity of the animal. Also, always try to shoot from a resting position, like crouched or prone. You’ll have a better aim, even more if you control your breath (using the space key).
  • A quick rule for the vitals (heart/lungs) is to aim for the shoulder blades, when the animal is sideways, or in between the shoulders/front legs when facing front.
  • Rocks aren’t only useful for distracting dinos. You can also use them to lure them into short distance or to position it. So always have some rocks in your pockets.
  • When trying to shoot down a T-Rex, if you can’t bring him down on the first shots and he starts running off then let him go. Crouch and follow/track him, it will not go to far and you will get a better chance to kill him without ruining your trophy. When you see it, advance crouched and when getting closer go in prone, then finish him (don’t get too close because while hurt it will scare off pretty easy). For Triceratops, you will want to kill them on the spot or getting them while it runs away. These guys run pretty fast and they generally don’t stop unless they’re far away. But you can still track it down, always being careful to not to scare it, and after some time it even responds to the caller.

    Awesome tips, thanks!
btw, you don’t mention the map fragment.

  3. Callen says:

Where I find the 700 double rifle?

  4. John says:

How do I use the health canisters? Tried every approach but don’t seem to respond

    • You have to equip them. Just put them on the slots 4 or 5, then press 4 or 5 key and when you have it on the hand, press the mouse button. It will spray you and give you health.

  5. John says:

Thanks for that, quite logical when you think about it.
